Cookies are small text files a website stores in your browser. We keep ours to a minimum: we only use cookies that the site needs to work, and two that remember choices you make. We don't use analytics, advertising or tracking cookies, and we don't let third parties set cookies on movemyfiles.com.
The cookies we use
| Cookie | What it does | When it's set | How long it lasts |
|---|---|---|---|
movemyfiles-session |
Your session cookie. Keeps you signed in as you move between pages and remembers what you're doing, for example that you've unlocked a password-protected transfer. | When you visit the site | Until 2 hours after your last activity |
XSRF-TOKEN |
Security. Protects forms and uploads against cross-site request forgery, so other websites can't act on your behalf. | When you visit the site | Same as the session cookie |
remember_web_… |
Keeps you signed in after you close your browser. | Only if you tick "Remember me" when you sign in | Until you sign out, or at most 400 days |
mmf_theme |
Remembers whether you prefer light or dark mode. | Only if you change the theme | 1 year |
mmf_vs |
An encrypted marker showing that this browser has already verified your email address, so you don't need a new code each time you send without an account. | After you verify your email address with a code | 30 days |
The session cookie expires after 120 minutes without activity.
Other storage in your browser
Browser storage. While an upload is running, the upload panel keeps its progress in your browser's IndexedDB storage: the transfer's ID and upload key, and the names, sizes and a fingerprint of the files you picked (never the files themselves). That's what lets an upload resume after a reload. It's deleted as soon as the upload finishes, is cancelled, or you start over.
Why there's no cookie banner
EU law allows websites to store information in your browser without asking for consent when it's strictly necessary to provide a service you've asked for. Every cookie above is either needed for the site to work (signing in, security, verifying senders) or set only because you asked for it (staying signed in, choosing a theme). We don't use any cookies that need your consent, so we don't show a consent banner. We tell you about them here instead.
Payments
When you upgrade, you're taken to a payment page hosted by Stripe. Stripe sets its own cookies on its own website, under its own policies (see stripe.com/privacy). We don't control those cookies.
Controlling cookies
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. If you block the session cookie or XSRF-TOKEN, you won't be able to sign in, verify your email or send files. Deleting mmf_vs means you'll be asked for a verification code again next time.
